The first mint in Africa was established in Church Square, Pretoria in 1892 when the Volksraad granted a concession to a consortium of Dutch, German & British investors. The mining & banking community of South Africa felt it should have its own mint and so the Royal Mint Pretoria opened in 1923. With privatisation in 1988, the South African Mint Company (Pty) Ltd was formed and and moved to these new premises in 1992. Here you can see original coins from the early days and can purchase limited edition coins of the 'Big 5', other animals and special commemorative sets.
