The Voortrekker Monument bearing the inscription: "Ons vir jou, Zuid Afrika!" (We for you, South Africa!) is a national icon for Afrikaans South Africans. On the anniversary of the battle at the Blood River, December 16th, Afrikaners countrywide visit the Voortrekker Monument to commemorate what they consider to be the most significant event in South Africa's history. Precisely constructed, a ray of sunlight falls onto the Shrine of Honor in the Heroes’ Hall only at 12 noon on the 16th December.
